Fin Collective / George Bates

About the artist: A professional artist since 1990, Bates' art has appeared worldwide in BIG magazine’s surfing issue, and the book SURF CULTURE: THE ART AND HISTORY OF SURFING (Gingko Press) with a related exhibition at Laguna Art Museum. He collaborated with David Carson to produce logos and various other items for the 2011 Quiksilver NYC PRO and the 2011 Quiksilver FRANCE PRO events and created two permanent installations for the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Arts for Transit program. One installation at the 36th Street A train station in Far Rockaway Queens is done in hand-painted glass, and the other at the Central Avenue M train station in Bushwick Brooklyn is done in laser-cut steel.
About the design: "Every surfer has noticed a precise shift in the wind or atmosphere when they know that the conditions at their particular break, or a favorite break are now perfect. When this happens, a clear yet loose image forms in the mind’s eye. The image for the fin seemed to capture those moments when you just know it’s good. You sense it, it’s in your mind’s eye, you don’t need to look at charts or cams, you just go (if you can). I like how the read of the image is entirely different upside down but still retains the same theme."
About the process: "The process for the work is constantly evolving and complex as a practice but I use the maxim: ‘It’s not just a statement, it is an experience' as a major guiding principle for all of the work and process. I’d say that the role of any piece is to use reality-avoidance to say something about reality, and to do that effectively it needs to have impact and create an atmosphere that holds interest. At the core of it all, the point of the process is to get at a celebration of an idea or issue. Intuition plays a major role in this as I’m looking for 'the moment between planning and chance.' That’s where things come alive in unexpected ways."
